dress codes decoded

Smart-casual? Cocktail? Business Formal? Let's face it, no one really understands the dress-code gibberish of wedding invitations and work functions. It's a vague language of relative terms and referneces to outdated garments like the "black tie" - which means nothing to women anyway. So, to save you from a frightening faux pas, here are some useful definitions from Raise your Game by Gavin Cowley and Jenny Handley (Jenny Handley Performance Management)
 
Black Tie
Men - Dark suit (or white jacket) and black bow tie
Women - Full length dress or skirt
 
Formal
Men - Dark matching suit and tie
Women - Long or full length dress
 
Smart / Elegant
Men - Suit and tie, or sports jacket and dark pants
Women - Short dress or pants suit
 
Smart -casual
Concentrate on the 'smart' - 70% of your outfit should be smart
 
Casual
Men
Golf shirt and jeans
Women
Jeans
