NEW LOOKS FOR OLD ITEMS

Maps make fantastic table covers

You will need:

  • Low table
  • Map (to cover the table top)
  • Coarse and fine sandpaper
  • Durable white PVA
  • Medium-sized paintbrush
  • Wood glue
  • Small rubber roller
  • Craft knife
  • Cutting mat
  • Clear matt varnish
To make:

  1. Lightly sand the table to create a surface for the paint to adhere to. Wipe with a damp cloth or dry paintbrush to remove the dust
  2. Paint the table with two or three layers of durable white PVA, leaving the table top bare and allowing each coat to dry completely beofre painting the next
  3. Pour a small amount of wood glue into a small bowl and dilute it with a little water - the glue shoud be only slightly more runny than usual. Mix well, then paint a generous coat of glue on the surface of the table top. Work quickly so that the glue does not have time to dry
  4. Place the map on the table, making sure that it is in the correct position before smoothing out. Remove air bubbles by rubbing them towards the edges of the table using the palms of your hands. Then use a small rubber roller to ensure that the map is smooth and securely glued in place. Leave to dry
  5. When the glue is dry, turn the table upside down. (Work on a carpet or mat to avoid damaging the map) Neatly trim the edges of the map using a craft knife and cutting mat
  6. Seal the top of the map with a few coats of clear varnish. Leave each coat to dry, then sand with fine sandpaper before applying another coat. Repeat a few times to create a durable end product
( I have seen this look great, using those wispy brown pattern pieces, overlapping one another, with a geometric shape painted onto the table in light beige shades)
