How to save all year round

  • January is the perfect time to buy...
 
Christmas fare: Festive season paraphernalia, such as decorations and wrapping paper are al going begging now, so stock up for December and save up to 70 percent. Turkey, gammon and other festive season foods are also all drastically marked down. Look for cured hams, which will keep well into the new year

Books: the end of January sees a mammoth post-xmas Exclusive sales, so stock up now
 
  • February is the perfect time to buy...
 
Diaries: Year planners, calendars and diaries are now all selling for at least half price

Computers: Last year's models are going cheaply and you could get as much as 25 % off a new PC
 
  • March is the perfect time to buy...
 
Swimming costumes: By March, even the most expensive costumes are cut down to at least half price

A new cell phone: It's a good time to buy either a contract or a handset, say Cell C and Vodacom. It's a quiet time of year, so they add lots of sweeteners...you may even get a DVD player thrown in
 
 
  • April is the perfect time to buy...
 
Chocolate: Gift packs from expert chocolatiers, go cheaply especially since easter is over

Summer clothes: They go on sale now
 
  • May is the perfect time to buy...
 
Summer shoes and handbags: They are on sale, so look out for the classics to put away until next summer

Gifts for women:  Gift packs of feminine items such as lingerie, perfume and beauty products abound after mother's day
 
  • June is the perfect time to buy...
 
Men's gifts: They go on sale from after Father's day, so stock up for the birthdays of the men in your life.
Books:  It's the biannual Exclusive books sales. so books are going on sale

Building and rennovations:  These are cheaper now, because  fewer people are thinking of home improvements. Do your tiling now, or re-do the the bathroom. Contractors are quiet so you save a lot on labour and also get more attention from them.
  • July is the perfect time to buy...
 
A pool or jacuzzi: These are a lot cheaper to put in now than at any other time of the year and even though it may take longer for the work to be completed (it being weather dependant) it's sure to be ready by spring, which is when prices go sky high 
Designer labels: At Johannesburg's International Fashion week, you could get up to 70% off major brands.
 
 
  • August is the perfect time to buy...
 
Houses and Property: There are fewer buyers in winter and those who are eager to sell are more likely to least consider even the most cheeky offers, says Re-Max. In addition, you're not competing with holiday makers and overseas would-be buyers.

 Beauty treatments and pampering spa packages: These are at their cheapest now, so indulge, especially in the first weeks of this month. Cape Town's spas have particularly good offers at this time, so bear that in mind if you are travelling
 
  • September is the perfect time to...
 
Go on holiday: It's Cape Town's 'Secret Season' which makes a trip to the Mother City easier on the pocket. Seaside towns generally are cheaper to visit at this time of year, as are some game lodges
Eat out: With heaps of special offers from restaurants all over the country, you can treat yourself for less. Keep a look out in your local papers for what is on offer
  • October is the perfect time to buy...
 
A new car: Dealers need to clear floorspace to make room for the new year's models, so you can get a great deal now, with as much as 10% off. Abd try to buy a car on th second last day of the month. If your dealer is rewarded with a bonus for making a target, as most of them are, this is when they'll discount the car even more if it means making that target
Winter clothing:  Coats, boots and scarves are all on sale now, so you could pay up to a third or less for that classic cashmere cardi
Appliances:  Fridges, stoves, washing machines and televisions start coming on sale now as shops clear old models to make space for festive season stock.
 
  • November is the perfect time to buy...
 
Toys: Shops make room on their shleves for their xmas stock, so these are the best bought now. Most toy shops don't do after-christmas special offers, according to Reggies and Toys R Us, so get in now.

Cellphones: There are lots of special offers on contracts and handsets now as dealers want to clear their shelves for the new xmas stock
 
 
  • December  is the perfect time to buy...
 
Clothes: Early December is a good time for clothing sales from the more up-market shops. In Cape Town, for example, it's the Hip-Hop Factory Shop's largest annual sale.
 
...save money on...
Gym membership:  Join now and you'll get a year's membership for the old year's rates, whereas if you wait until you've made your new years resolution, you'll pay the new year price for 12 months. According to Vrigin Active, this can save you around R800
